Arizona Legislators recently passed SB1062. Whether you see this law as protection of rights or legalizing discrimination, it is a hot topic on the web and around the water coolers. Again our nation is polarized around a social issue.
Those who point the finger at the legislature and talk about how stupid they are violate the very code of love they proclaim to support. Those who point the finger at people apposing SB1062 and talk about how stupid they are violate the very code of love they proclaim to support. I am again saddened by our national response. Especially the Christians. Love is for people we DON'T agree with.
Matthew 5.43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Some Christians want to point the finger and say "Quit persecuting other people!" When they do, they, in turn, persecute the persecutor. This has no value. This hypocrisy does not go unnoticed by those outside the faith and is the type of thing that causes many to stay far from the Church and her people. We must stand up against injustice. We must defend the poor, the widow and the orphan (those who are unable to defend themselves and can't pay you back for standing up for them). However, when we do, we must look to those who have gone before us, like MLK Jr. (By using MLK I am not drawing a parallel to the Civil Rights movement of the 60's and the effort for homosexual equality in certain spheres of our culture) He and others used non-violence. We can commit murder with our words and our hearts. In our effort to stand for others, we must do so like Jesus, not like the rest of the world. Love is the way forward whether you are for SB1062 or not. That is the standard Jesus has set for us and the one we should be worried about.
